Fun Friday - Play and its purpose

 Week 5 Term 1

Welcome to Ahuriri Alexander, George, Mia and Tabby!

We are so glad to have you join our studio.

It's been another magical week in Ahuriri learning about letter sounds, numbers, writing, ball skills and Kapa Haka. We are so proud of the children and how they are settling into our school routines and ways of working.

In Kapa Haka this week, the children have been learning about the days of the week and colours. The children have been learning the te reo names as well as how to sign each of these as well. We are amazed at how quickly they are picking up.

Friday's are affectionately dubbed 'Fun Friday' in Ahuriri. Our day is filled with play, exploring, music, dance, sport and creation. A range of 'special' things are put out for the children to enjoy and create with and we often explore new art concepts on a Friday. The children are able to bring in their scooter and helmets for a zoom around the courts and the children are able to play soccer on the field during our takaro time.

We also have a special Ahuriri Assembly where the children learn about something new and may receive a certificate.

Play improves the cognitive, physical, social, and emotional well-being of children and young people. Through play, children learn about the world and themselves. They also learn skills they need for study, work and relationships such as:

  • confidence
  • self-esteem
  • resilience
  • interaction
  • social skills
  • independence
  • curiosity
  • coping with challenging situations
  • creativity
  • balance
  • co-ordination
  • make believe - imagination
